Results of GOP primary not expected until middle of week

Counting of the ballots is scheduled to begin this afternoon, but the results are not expected until about the middle of this week in the GOP primary held in Virginia this weekend.

Tens of thousands of delegates cast their ballots in long lines at about 40 locations throughout the state.

The “unassembled convention” will determine the nominees for this year’s race for governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general. Republicans haven’t won a statewide race in Virginia since 2009.

Amanda Chase, Kirk Cox, Pete Snyder, and Glenn Youngkin — are considered the top contenders competing for governor on the GOP side.

Democrats choose their gubernatorial nominee in a primary next month.
